How to Protect Against Falls in the Workplace

Falls are one of the most common causes of work-related injuries and fatalities, but fortunately, they are rather easy to prevent. It is the job of the employer to ensure the workplace and/or worksite are properly set up so that employees cannot fall from platforms, elevated workstations, or holes in flooring or walls.

What can employers do to reduce the number of falls in the workplace?

Fall protection must be provided at elevations of four feet or more in general industry workplaces, five feet or more in shipyards, and six feet or more in the construction industry. If employees are working above dangerous machinery, fall protection must be provided regardless of elevation. This protection includes:

  • A guard rail and toe-board around any elevated area with open sides.
  • A guard rail around any holes that a person could fall into.
  • A guard rail around any area above dangerous equipment or machinery.
  • Safety harness, safety nets, stair railing, and handrails depending on the specific job.
  • Keep floors clean, clear, and dry as possible.
  • Providing protective equipment at no cost to workers.
  • Training workers about potential hazards and ensuring everyone understands.
