Fire Safety Plan

Industrial worker cutting and welding metal with many sharp sparks

Workplace fires can lead to employee death, destruction of facilities and equipment, and losses totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. The best way to prevent this is to follow OSHA's standards for fire safety. Run through the list below, and browse our products online to make sure you are up to code in your own fire safety practices.

Fire Exits

  • Every building should have at least two means of escape in the event of a fire.
  • Fire doors should not be locked or blocked when employees are inside.
  • Clear exit routes from obstructions and makes sure they are marked with EXIT signs.

Fire Extinguishers

  • Your building must have the appropriate fire extinguisher for existing fire hazards.
  • Employees should be trained on the usage of fire extinguishers.
  • Keep fire extinguishers in proper working condition.

An Emergency Evacuation Plan

  • Employers should have a written emergency action plan describing routes and procedures employees should follow in the event of a fire.
  • Procedures for assisting any employees with physical impairments should also be included.
  • Once the written plan is complete all employees must be trained in what to do.

A Fire Prevention Plan

  • In addition to the evacuation plan, a written prevention plan should be recorded.
  • Clean-up procedures for flammable materials and waste should be included in this plan.
  • Any equipment that produces heat should be properly stored and maintained and kept away from flammable materials.
