Safety Ideas In Time for Spring

Two road crew workers

A poet once wrote that April is the cruelest month, but it doesn’t have to be. After all, winter is over, and spring is upon us (perhaps more as a promise than a fact in some northern states). In many parts of the U.S., April is the month outdoor work begins. New construction picks up, road crews fix potholes and winter wear and tear, and people emerge from their homes and start working in and enjoying their yards.

Now that the ground is thawing, here are a few safety resources and ideas to keep in mind this Spring and in the seasons to come. Adress these items below with your crew and have a safe and healthy Spring!

National Work Zone Awareness Week

April 3-7th

This year’s theme is “Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.” The goal is to get people to put down their cell phones and pay attention to the critical driving job! You can find more information and a poster you can download and print at: https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/wz/outreach/wz_awareness.htm.

National Alcohol Screening Day

April 6th

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) started this national effort to identify alcohol dependency and related problems in 1999. As a supervisor, asking or encouraging employees to get screened may feel uncomfortable. Fortunately, the NIH has facts you can download and print to help spread the word about the hazards of too much drinking: https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/brochures-and-fact-sheets.

Earth Day

April 22nd

Green building isn’t just a fad; there is real value in sustainability, recycling, waste reduction, and energy savings. You and your employees can get your hands dirty and plant some trees at home. You can step-up household recycling efforts—can you shift far enough that your recycling bin weighs more than your garbage bin each week? For more information, go to: http://www.earthday.org/.

A Reminder - Have Crews Call 811 Before Digging

Whether repairing a sewer line or replacing a fence post at home, they should always call 811 before starting to dig. For more information, go to: http://call811.com/.
